Resistance to
rust/corrosion: Steel fasteners coated with Xylan over a
zinc pretreatment provide corrosion resistance almost
equal to that of stainless steel. (They last as long as
2,500 hours in ASTM B-1 17 salt-fog tests with less than
15% red rust.)
But excellent resistance to salt-foq' corrosion is only
the first of many reasons to specify Xylan fastener
coatings. Here are some of the others:
-
RESISTANCE TO
GALVANIC CORROSION: Galvanic corrosion is a menace
when two metals that are far away from one another on
the electromotive (galvanic) scale are joined by a
conductor such as moisture. That's frequently what
happens when stainless-steel fasteners are used in
combination with ductile iron, so often employed in
waterworks pipes and fittings. In fact, some suppliers
of these products will not warrant their items if
stainless-steel fasteners are used.
Xylan coatings reduce this corrosion. They also have a
dielectric strength from 500-1,200 volts per mil (which
inhibits galvanic corrosion).
-
COST:
Compared to stainless steel, Xylan coatings can save
significant amounts. For example:
-
CONTROLLED
TORQUE:
Xylan coatings are engineered with PTFE for
lubrication, which allows precise and uniform make-up
torque. (Stainless steel fasteners are prone to galling
and often seize before reaching the required preload.)
-
EASY REMOVAL OF
NUTS:
The lubricity of Xylan coatings makes
removing nuts easy - even after many years of use.
-
WIDE RANGE OF
OPERATING TEMPERATURES:
Xylan coatings operate easily
from -425'F 1255'C to +550°F/290°C.
-
UV-STABLE:
Some Xylan formulations have superb resistance to
ultraviolet light.
-
Resistance
to hot soil: Xylan helps protect fasteners from
corrosion caused by hot soils and most common chemicals.
-
Easily
applied: Xylan can be applied by conventional spray,
HVLP electrostatic and dip/spin, making Xylan
cost-effective for any size item, from large fasteners
to small O-rings.
-
FDA-acceptable: Many Xylan coating formulations comply
with Food & Drug Administration regulations.
-
Color
coding: Xylan coatings can be easily color-coded for
specific applications (to avoid possible confusion).
IMPORTANT:
For maximum performance. Xylan coatings require the
equipment, experience and skills of a professional applicator. We
offer a list of approved applicators around the world and will send
you a copy if you contact us (see below).
